Operculicarya pachypus is a small, deciduous, pachycaul tree. It tends to stay compact, with the trunk growing in a conical shape and looks like an odd bonsai tree. The branches are glabrous, zig-zagged, and its roots often swell to form unique, and twisted design. The green leaves are very tiny, which work proportionately for that bonsai look. The flowers are small, yellow-green, and appear in late winter. This plant is quite a strong plant. It is grown in harsh conditions, it is a relatively adaptable species. The plant is drought tolerant and does well in full sun in most places and it is native to south-western Madagascar. It cannot tolerate freezing conditions. This particular specimen measures 16 inches tall. operculicarya pachypus for sale

How to grow operculicarya pachypus

It does not need a lot of water, but during growing season, it can enjoy a lot of water. Water it a bit regularly in a container. Its roots will swell underneath the soil, and you will only know that is the case when you repot the plant. Like most caudiciforms, this plant enjoys a fast-draining potting soil. Avoid peat if possible, and amend the soil with drainage material such as pumice, expanded shale, perlite, or a similar product. In cold winters, the plant will be more or less deciduous, but will remain evergreen in warmer locations. Avoid watering during periods of dormancy.
